I agree with this statement, however as a hiring manager it is difficult, as the article states translating military skills to civilian skills. It would be helpful if the military/government could provide some additional skills that could assist the vets in finding a civilian job. I have been looking for Maintenance Technicians for a client and have interviewed several vets that have military maintenance experience but unfortunately their experience is in a specialized area ( I can see why the military would want individuals that are specialized in one area - this way, they are, the best of the best) and in many cases in the civilian world we need someone with a varied maintenance background.

Seems like Big Brother. I understand though how this can long term cut costs. Can I impose these standards on employees already on staff and give them a year to comply without repercussions. Can anyone tell me what my company's health care costs can be decreased by as a % if I can assure that we do nicotine screening? Seems absurd, but it can be good for my employees and my bottom line.

Good post! I agree with you that Jack Welch's approach does not foster long term committment rather fear based performance. Yes there are times when we have part ways with employees and we should but absent misconduct it should be the exception not the rule.

Great advice! I would also recommend training classes concerning harassment for all employees at least once every 2 years. You also need every employee to sign a document stating they attended the training sessions. Make sure all employees attend the sessions, especially senior management. It is regrettable but necessary that you need to actually train and remind adults to behave properly and treat others with respect.

Great article! While you need to keep good documentation, always remember that any form of communication can be subpoenaed so make sure you are very careful with your written notes and verbal communication. Only share with others what is absolutely necessary and utilize all of your listening skills.

I worked at Panera Bread in Denville, NJ and I was subjected to sexual harrassment. The managers were discussed about playboy magazines while Jeff Schneider the store manager was rubbing his body against me. I was wise to resign right away! Their behavior was so disgusting & obscene and it makes me wonder why anyone would want to work there!!
